Othering: Exploring more-than-human design intelligence
Othering explores how machine learning can synthesize the collective intelligence embedded in urban morphology with the biological intelligence of slime mold in order to rethink urbanization. The project approaches the city as a spatial and material form of intelligence, one that has evolved over centuries and become manifest in architecture, infrastructure, and urban form.
Through deep learning, this accumulated urban intelligence is brought into relation with the adaptive and self-organizing behavior of slime mold. Machine intelligence does not appear here as an autonomous creative agent, but as a mediating system through which urban and biological intelligence can be analyzed, translated, and reconfigured within the design process.
Using synthetic design methods, the project investigates new modes of urban morphogenesis and develops speculative proposals across multiple scales, from individual buildings to larger urban territories. Othering suggests that alternative urban futures may emerge through design processes shaped by forms of intelligence that extend beyond the human alone.
